Built From the Ground Up
Great Lakes Synthetic Turf was started by Ethan Williams with a straightforward goal -- build something real, deliver quality work, and treat people honestly. Ethan comes from a hardworking family rooted in the heavy equipment and construction industry. He grew up around machines, stone, dirt, excavation work, and job sites his entire life, learning the value of hard work, attention to detail, and doing things the right way from an early age.
That hands-on experience started young. Ethan began cutting grass in the Chicagoland area at 12 years old, and by 16 he had transitioned into landscaping and artificial turf projects. What started as neighborhood lawn work grew into a full passion for excavation, outdoor construction, and premium turf installation. Over the years, that experience taught him equipment operation, customer service, project management, and what it truly takes to build something that lasts.
Before going full-time into the business, Ethan worked as a police officer in the Chicago area while continuing to build and operate his turf company on the side. Balancing both careers sharpened his discipline, communication, professionalism, and ability to handle pressure while still delivering quality work. Every part of that background shapes the way he runs the business today.
Now, with nearly a decade of hands-on experience in artificial turf and outdoor projects, Ethan has combined his construction background with a passion for creating clean, durable, and low-maintenance outdoor spaces. After relocating to West Michigan, he planted roots in the Grand Rapids area and founded Great Lakes Synthetic Turf to serve customers throughout Michigan, Chicago, and the Midwest with the kind of installation quality most companies never reach.

We install a layer of drainage stone -- not just compacted native soil. This drainage base is what prevents water pooling, frost heave damage, and the premature turf failure that plagues installations throughout Michigan. When spring thaw hits, water moves through the stone instead of sitting under your turf.
Framed Edge System
Solid perimeter boards are secured with 2-inch perimeter screws featuring built-in washers. This creates a rigid frame that holds the turf edge perfectly in place through years of freeze-thaw cycles, ground movement, and heavy foot traffic. No plastic edging that shifts, buckles, or fails within a season.
American-Made Turf
We exclusively source turf from American manufacturers. These products have superior UV stabilization, consistent pile height, and documented safety testing. Imported turf may cost less per square foot, but it fades faster, mats sooner, and often lacks the durability data to back its claims.
